Learn to Sail for 4-12 year olds

Start your child on the journey of a lifetime with our fun introduction to sailing. From age 4 and with no experience necessary, our Little Tackers course will give them the skills to rig up a boat and sail around in sheltered waters. They will make new friends, learn how to tie knots, play games and have loads of fun while learning how to sail.

From there they can progress to the Australian Sailing Tackers learn to sail courses in Optimists. When ready, they will be encouraged to get involved in regular Club sailing activities.

The Tackers program is only delivered in a boat called an Opti. This boat was specifically designed for the program and is an ideal introduction to dinghy sailing. The boats allow two kids to sail together and as they gain confidence and move up from Tackers 1 to Tackers 2 they are able to sail the boat alone. The boats have built-in buoyancy which means they provide extra stability.

What’s next, after Tackers?

There are three levels to the Tackers program that kids can progress through. When they finish Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast! they can progress to a program at a sailing club called OutThere Sailing or here at RFBYC, they can join as a Junior Member and participate in “Green or Orange Fleet” Club training and activities. AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT REGISTRATIONS

To make a course booking, please use the ‘enrol now’ button to go to the registration page. This will take you to an Australian Sailing (AS) registration page. Australian Sailing is the national body for the sport. RFBYC is a registered Australian Sailing Training Centre.

You will need to know the Australian Sailing (AS) number of the sailor in order to register or you can create one for a new sailor. This becomes your childs unique identifier and stores their course information for future reference which can be accessed by your registered club and yourself. It is important that the AS number is created for the person doing the course with their own name and details, this number stays with them for their lifetime journey in sailing.
