What is Next?

Tackers 3 and Out There Sailing are just the beginning of your sailing journey. Sailing as a sport has something for everyone, so whether you have ambitions to represent Australia at the next Olympics or you just enjoy a casual cruise down the river we’ve got you covered.

Green and Orange Fleet

GREEN FLEET – 7-12yrs sailors who have completed Tackers 3.

ORANGE FLEET – 12yrs + sailors who have completed Out There Sailing.

Green and Orange Fleet are development fleets aimed to bridge the gap between Tackers 3/Out There Sailing and being able to sail independently, whether that be in order to join club racing or just to be able to look after yourself afloat. Both Green (for under-12s) and Orange (for 12+) focus on developing key boat handling skills as well as the mental and physical attributes necessary to be successful. These are tracked on Outcomes cards which are filled in by instructors each term, so you will receive regular updates on your progress, and will be encouraged to progress once your coaches feel you are ready.

In Green and Orange Fleet you’ll be exposed to different conditions afloat and enabled to develop at your own pace, learning through games and activities to be an independent and skilled young sailor. You will also get the chance to try out different types of boat to assist you in deciding where you want to take your sailing to next. Many local regattas also have a Green Fleet category, so if racing is your thing you can get started straight away.
Green and Orange Fleet run every Sunday during term time apart from long weekends and follow the club racing timetable.  Training is from 08:00-11:00 for morning races or 13:00 - 16:00 for afternoon races, so please arrive in time beforehand to get your boat rigged up in time.

Racing Pathway – Fleet Training, Intermediate and Open Fleet Racing

Sail racing is a sport that employs both mind and body in a dynamic, ever-changing environment, training you to think on your feet and make decisions based on a wide range of factors in order to come out on top.

For those interested in sailing competitively, we offer regular weekday evening training for the following classes:

• Optimist
• Open Skiff
• Laser
• 29er
• Windsurfing and Wingfoiling

In fleet training you’ll learn how to get the best out of your boat, as well as developing all the skills you’ll need to get around the race course effectively and start getting the results you want. Our fleet coaches have all sailed competitively themselves in the classes they coach, so you can be confident that you are getting the best advice from some of WA’s top young sailors.

Once you’re feeling ready to race, you can join our Intermediate Fleet on Sundays. The Intermediate Fleet is designed to be a gentle introduction to club racing. With the support of a dedicated coach you’ll receive pointers both before, during and after the race, so that you can hone your skills and improve your game.

Open Fleet is for sailors who are confident in their racing ability and want to go head to head with some of the best sailors in the club. In Open Fleet you will be expected to have a good grasp of the Racing Rules of Sailing and be able to get around the course independently, though of course if you have any questions our coaches and staff are always on hand to help you out.

The club racing pathway will prepare you to enter regattas at the local, state and even international level, and the club has various programs to support you in pursuing your sailing dreams.

Adventurer’s Club Pathway

For those who are not interested in competitive racing, our Adventurer’s Club Pathway provides an opportunity to hone your sailing skills whilst exploring the Swan River.  Study how to navigate using a compass and chart, learn what to do when things go wrong afloat, and discover ways to protect our local environment, all while having fun with your friends on the water.  At the end of each term you’ll also get a chance to help organise and take part in an adventure sail to which the whole club is invited, so bring your friends (or even your parents) and show them what you’ve learned. To inquire, please contact RFBYC Dinghy and Training Centre.
