Power Boat Courses
Powerboating is one of the most popular ways of getting out on the water and there is a large powerboating community here at RFBYC. As a fully accredited Australian Sailing Centre we are able to offer a range of powerboating courses to suit your needs, so whether you are looking to get afloat for the first time, wanting to hone your skills, or are in need of some training to support your work as a watersports instructor or club volunteer, we’ve got you covered.
Recreational Skippers Ticket
The Western Australian Recreational Skippers Ticket is a must have for everybody who wants to drive any power driven vessel (including yachts) with a motor larger than 6hp. As with a motor vehicle license there are both theory and practical components to the test, and you will need to pass the theory before you can do the practical. Our training package includes training for both tests as well as home study materials, so you’ll be well equipped with everything you need to be successful.
Our RST courses include two evening theory classes to cover all the necessary theory plus a half day practical training and assessment. The theory classes will take place on two weekday evenings, with the practical scheduled for the weekend at your preferred time.
Theory
You can get a head start on the theory required by reading the Department of Transport’s Recreational Skippers Ticket Workbook HERE. There are also some practice multiple choice theory questions on the Department of Transport’s website HERE.
Prerequisite: Participants will be required to provide information for the Department of Transport including identification, eyesight declaration, medical declaration and complete a letter of consent form.
Cost per adult is $300 | $240 RFBYC member participant
Australian Sailing Powerboat Courses
The Australian Sailing Powerboat courses are designed to give you a more thorough introduction to powerboat handling than the RST course and to equip you with skills necessary to provide support for on water activities such as sailing.
National Powerboat Handling
This one day course introduces the fundamentals of powerboat handling. You will learn about how to equip and prepare your boat for the water, cover key skills such as berthing and unberthing, rescuing a Person Overboard, manoeuvring in close quarters, and how to handle the boat at both low and high speeds. In addition we will cover the basics of navigation and chartwork so you know how to plan a basic passage. This course is a prerequisite for the Dinghy Instructor and Windsurf Instructor courses. It is also highly recommended for on-water volunteers.
Safety Boat Operator
This one day course is focused on the skills you need to provide safety cover for sailing and other on-water activities. You will learn how to assist in a variety of scenarios including capsize, inversion, entrapment and Person Overboard, as well as being taught correct towing techniques for different types of dinghies. We will also discuss how to rescue different types of craft including windsurfers, kite surfers, kayaks, etc. This course is a prerequisite for the Dinghy Coach course and is highly recommended for existing dinghy and windsurf instructors and club volunteers. An RST and solid powerboat handling skills are required.
These courses are offered from time to time to assist with Club volunteer roles.
