Pursuit Race Instructions for Keelboats and Dinghies

Under the handicap start system, boats are to start at one-minute intervals according to their handicap. Each boat will receive a fall number ahead of the event. The higher the number, the earlier the boat will start. The slowest boats will be assigned the highest fall numbers and the fastest boats will be assigned the lowest fall numbers.

The numbers will be displayed sequentially at minute intervals from the RFBYC start box (Keelboats) or start boat (Dinghies). Each boat can only start after the fall of its assigned number. Before the first boat starts there will be the normal five minute warning sequence, followed by the fall of the numbers.

  • Five minutes: Short sound signal: Warning Signal: Naval Numeral 1 Flag is raised.
  • Four minutes: Short sound signal: Preparatory Signal: P Flag is raised
  • One Minute: Long sound signal: P Flag is lowered, First Start number (30) is raised
  • Start: Short sound signal: First start number (30) falls
A boat starting before the fall of her allocated handicap number will be penalised ONE minute for each full minute or part thereof if she starts early, plus TWO minutes. This penalty will be added to her actual finishing time for the race. Recall signals are not made.
