Keelboat Fleets and Divisions
BW8
RFBYC’s BW8 Fleet Captain is: Mike TownsendBakewell-White 8metre (BW8) combines resources with design to create a keel boat to take people from dinghy to keel boats and/or from no knowledge to competent sailor.
The Club utilises a fleet of Club owned and borrowed (from members) for the “Club Use” programme as training craft for those who wish to pass through the Keelboat course and competitive programmes offered via the Training School.
Couta Boats
RFBYC’s Couta Boat Fleet Captain is: Kevin WoodthorpeThe Couta Boat is a non developmental heritage class. It is a traditional wooden fishing boat open, with centre case, and gaff or lug rigged.
Dragon
RFBYC’s Dragon Fleet Captain is: Sandy AndersonThe Western Australian Dragon fleet prides itself on being the friendliest and most inclusive classes at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. We enthusiastically welcome new sailors to the joys of Dragon sailing and have a number of initiatives to bring new people to the class through free coaching on Saturday mornings and a women’s helm regatta held at the beginning of the season.

Etchells
RFBYC’s Etchells Fleet Captain is: Harry CoulsonThe Etchells class, formally known as E22 (because the design is 22 feet on the waterline), has an Australian Championship held every year and is rotated around the States in which there are established Etchells fleets.
Currently there are 25 Etchells class yachts registered with the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club; of those, seven are past State and National Champion holders, of which several members have been awarded these two accolades more than once.
Flying Fifteen
RFBYC’s Flying Fifteens Fleet Captain is: Murray Johns | Fleet Brochure | VideoFlying Fifteens were introduced to the Swan River by RFBYC member at the time, Tally Hobbs who was impressed by an article he saw on the boat. He wrote to the designer, Uffa Fox in England, to request a set of plans and started building one in 1948. He had ‘Serena’ on the water for Opening Day at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in 1950.
