SCHOOL HOLIDAY TRAINING
Would your children like to learn to sail or are you simply looking for an interesting leisure activity? Every school holidays Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club Sail Training School offers learn to sail programmes in Optimist and Pacer dinghies, Keelboat Crewing Courses in BW8 Sports Boats and powerboat handling programmes. Courses of one week duration (Monday to Friday) are conducted by competent instructors accredited by Yachting Australia, in the safe and sheltered waters of Freshwater Bay in Peppermint Grove. This is a fun and exciting way to spend the holidays.

Enrolments are open to children between the ages of 6 and 17.

PLEASE NOTE: PARTICIPANTS MUST BE WATER CONFIDENT AND ABLE TO SWIM (buoyancy jackets supplied)

Little Tackers Fun Introduction to Sailing
A fun introduction to sailing for boys and girls aged 6 to 9 years using Optimist Dinghies. Sessions are conducted between 10:00 and 12:00 each day. This course covers rigging an Optimist, tying basic knots, nautical games and hands-on (non-threatening) sailing in shallow water.

Prerequisite:
No sailing experience necessary but participants must be able to swim and be water confident.

Dinghy Sailing: Basic Skills 1 and 2 (Optimist and Pacer)
Yachting Australia's GISBS Basic Skills 1 and 2 for children aged 8 - 17 years. Sessions are conducted each morning Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 12:00. This course introduces rigging, capsize recovery drill, rope work, launching and recovery, sailing techniques and weather forecasts.

Prerequisite:
Basic Skills 1 - no experience but must be able to swim and be water confident
Basic Skills 2 - must have completed Basic Skills 1 or equivalent

Participants receive a log book and course certificate on successful completion.

Better Sailing (Optimist and Pacer)
Third level of YA Log Book programme for 8 to 17 year olds. Sessions are conducted each afternoon between 13:00 and 16:00. This course covers advanced techniques such as roll tacking, roll jibing, handling a spinnaker and trapeze.

Prerequisite:
Participants must have completed and be competent in BS1 and BS2

Introduction to Teams Racing (Pacer)
For those wishing to get involved in this popular and fast growing style of racing - whether it be at Club level (Inter-Club Teams Racing competition) or school (Secondary School's Teams Racing competition). This course will give participants an understanding of basic teams racing fundamentals such as finishing combinations, essential rules, tactics and manoeuvres (e.g. mark traps, covering, blanketing) as well as highlighting the importance of boat handling and speed control plus more.

Prerequisite:
Participants must have completed Better Sailing and have good boat handling skills or have prior sailing ability to fleet racing level.

Sessions will be conducted between 13:00 and 16:00 each day.

Advanced Teams Racing
Depending on demand, the Club will offer an advanced course for those already team racing. Designed to sharpen skills prior to competition, this programme will include practice racing and be conducted by an experienced teams racing coach.

Powerboat Training: Recreational Skipper's Ticket Training Course including Theory and Practical Assessments
A 15 hour training course suitable for new powerboat owners or those wishing to brush up on their theory and practical skills before attempting the Government's new Recreational Skipper's Ticket Assessments. This course will run over four days as follows:

Monday 13:00 to 16:00 Theory
Tuesday 13;00 to 16:00 Theory/Assessment
Wednesday 13:00 to 17:30 Practical on-water
Thursday 13:00 to 17:00 Practical/Assessment

Prerequisite:
Participants must be 14 years or over

OTHER CHILDREN'S TRAINING

Schools Based Sailing
RFBYC Sail Training School conducts classes for school groups either during school hours or after school. These can include 'A Taste of Sailing' (where contact time is limited), 'Learn to Sail Basic and Advanced', 'Introduction to Teams Racing', 'Introduction to Keelboat Crewing' and 'Powerboat Handling'. Classes can also be tailored to each group's specific needs e.g. a combination of keelboat and dinghy sailing.

Recreational Skipper's Ticket: Theory and Practical Assessment
The Club regularly conduct RST assessments for small groups on an ad-hoc basis. The theory assessment is conducted first and once successful completed, is followed by practical on-water assessment. Times for the practical assessment are arranged with the Club's Assessor.

Note:
Participants will need to study the RST Work Book and have practical skill before attempting the assessments - there is no teaching component.

Recreational Skipper's Ticket Practical Training
Practical training in handling small powered craft is available for those who wish to sit the RST but feel they should brush up on their boat handling skills. This training is arranged as required by contacting the office. Up to three participants can be accommodated at a time on the vessel.

National Power Boat Handling Certificate
This detailed 25 hour Yachting Australia Course is designed for novice students who have access to a powerboat and wish to gain proficiency in a broad range of practical, theoretical and safety issues. It is also a mandatory for students wishing to become sailing instructors. The course includes theory and practical assessments for Recreational Skipper's Ticket. This course will run over five week days between 12:30 and 17:30 each day and comprises three theory sessions and two practical sessions.

Prerequisite:
Participants must be 14 years or over

Sunday Morning Dinghy Courses
RFBYC Sail Training School offers 'Learn to Sail' courses on Sunday mornings ranging from Little Tackers, Basic Skills 1 and 2 to Teams Racing. This programme runs from 09:00 to 12:00 each day for 6 weeks. For more information contact the Training Coordinator.

RFBYC Sail Training School can arrange private lessons at the request of individuals. These can be tailored specifically to your child's needs and should be booked directly through the Training Coordinator. We can also run courses for specific groups as required.

PRIVATE LESSONS/COURSES
Upon request from individuals, one-on-one dinghy lessons can be arranged. Sessions are charged by the hour with a minimum of 2 hours per session. These courses are conducted in either Pacer or Optimist dinghies at a cost of $55 per hour including GST.

After school group programmes can also be arranged - price will depend on number of participants/boats, hours required and level of instruction.
